It doesn't very much look like a farm, does it? It is owned by Amber Real Estate Investments and operated by Hook 2 Sisters - both part of the controversial Boparan Holdings group of companies. It is permitted to rear up to 312,500 chickens for meat production. The chickens are grown at an artificially fast rate over a 42 day period (6 weeks) before being transported away in lorries, just like the one shown here, for slaughter elsewhere.

...as you can see from the comparative overhead photos, the re-development of the site in 2016 doubled the floorspace of the four original sheds. The original operation was discreet and caused little or no nuisance to nearby properties or wildlife. However, the modern materials used in the new buildings make them stand out in the Somerset countryside setting and many native trees and shrubs around the site have been lost.

This place is a planning, pollution control and animal welfare disaster that is making our lives a misery and has blighted our part of the lovely Somerset countryside – and no one affected by it had any say in the matter! The unfiltered odour from the ammonia and faeces of over 300,000 factory reared chickens that builds up over every six-week ‘crop cycle’ is causing significantly harmful impacts on the residents and tourist-dependent businesses in the surrounding area.

Some people may find parts of the video upsetting or distasteful but this is the truth behind the UK's intensive chicken farming industry, which is being allowed to happen by ill-informed, naive or dishonest planning authorities.
